What It Is And How We Take Care Of It

Chemical products in your home are deemed Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) once they are no longer in use or have passed their expiration date. The potential for their ignitability and toxicity make them hazardous to us and those around us. HHW is not regulated by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is why the Washington County Solid Waste District has taken a proactive approach in seeing that the residents of Washington County have a method to properly dispose of their hazardous materials. We offer our residents Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days throughout the year for your convenience. Thank you for using this service.

HHW Days 2026

Our HHW days for 2026 are April 18th and October 17th, from 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM. The cutoff time is dependant on volume and is subject to change.
HHW day takes place at the Washington County Landfill. 330 N Landfill Rd in Washington. There will be signs and employees directing you on where to go.

Types of Material Accepted

Only on Hazardous Waste days do we accept the following: aerosol cans, bulging batteries, fuel, herbicides, medical waste, paint thinners, pesticides and propane.

Solar panels are currently classified as hazardous waste and can only be brought out on hazardous waste day.

Please remember: Water-based and latex paint should be dried out at home and placed in your regular garbage once completely solid. Only bring oil-based paint, stains, and lacquer along with any other hazardous waste to the Collection Event.

How Much Can I Bring?

Our Household Hazardous Waste Collection is for normal household quantities. Each household may bring approximately 20 gallons or 200 pounds of material per collection event. This amount is intended to represent a typical household’s accumulation between our twice-yearly collection events. Large quantities from residents, businesses, contractors, or commercial loads will NOT be accepted.

Cost to Dispose of HHW

This service is free for Washington County residents bringing materials from their homes. However, there is a charge for tires. Contact us for more information on the charges or any other questions you might have.

 

We do not accept hazardous waste from commercial entities/businesses. Veolia Environmental Services is based in SLC, UT and regularly comes to our area for pickup. Please contact them about any of your hazardous waste disposal needs at 801-294-7111.
